Craggy Gardens sits just north of Asheville and is one of the most iconic stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Why It’s Special
At roughly 5,000 feet elevation, Craggy Gardens offers:
- Layered mountain views
- Unique twisted tree formations
- A moderate hiking trail
- Stunning rhododendron blooms in late spring
The terrain here feels slightly rugged and wild — less manicured than other overlooks.
The Rhododendron Bloom
Late May to early June brings dramatic pink and purple blooms that blanket the ridges. It’s one of the most photographed events on the Parkway.
Timing matters. Bloom weeks vary slightly each year based on weather.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive early during peak season
- Dress in layers (temperatures drop at elevation)
- Check for fog forecasts
- Expect crowds during fall
Craggy Gardens works best when paired with nearby overlooks rather than treated as a standalone stop.
